Curcumin (Longvida)

Four randomized, placebo-controlled trials have tested Longvida on cognition. Two from the same research group were positive at 400mg/day: in 60 healthy adults aged 60–85 (Cox et al., 2015), sustained attention and working memory improved 1 hour after a single dose, and working memory and mood after 4 weeks; in 80 adults aged 50–80 (Cox et al., 2020, funded by Longvida's maker Verdure Sciences), working memory was better at 12 weeks and fatigue lower at 4 and 12 weeks. Two trials funded by the US National Institutes of Health, with capsules supplied by Verdure Sciences, gave 2000mg/day and found no cognitive benefit: 12 weeks in 39 healthy adults aged 45–74 (Santos-Parker et al., 2018) and 12 months in 88 adults with chronic kidney disease (Gimblet et al., 2024). The positive results have not been repeated by an independent group.

作用機序

Longvida is Verdure Sciences' trademarked solid lipid curcumin particle (SLCP) formulation of curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric (Curcuma longa). A 400mg dose of Longvida provides about 80mg of curcumin, so doses given as mg of Longvida and mg of curcumin differ about five-fold. Curcumin has properties in preclinical studies that may act on processes behind age-related cognitive decline, but those benefits had not been established in humans when the Longvida trials began; the trials measured cognitive and mood outcomes, not how they might arise.

実証された効果

  • Better working memory in healthy older adults at 400mg/day (two trials from one research group)
  • Lower fatigue at 4 and 12 weeks (one trial)
  • Better attention and working memory 1 hour after a single dose (one trial)

副作用と注意事項

  • Fasting blood glucose was slightly higher than on placebo after 12 weeks in one trial (not in the diabetic range); the effect in people with diabetes has not been tested
  • In a 12-month trial at 2000mg/day, abdominal pain was more common than on placebo (13% vs 5%, not statistically significant); no serious adverse event was attributed to curcumin
  • Turmeric and curcumin supplements (not Longvida specifically) have been linked to rare cases of acute liver injury
  • In a laboratory study on pig liver cells, curcumin changed the activity of enzymes that clear warfarin; ask a doctor before combining curcumin with an anticoagulant

摂取方法

Dosage400mg/day of Longvida (about 80mg curcumin) — the dose of both positive trials; 2000mg/day was tested and found no cognitive benefit
TimingOnce daily. The trials measured effects 1–3 hours after a dose and over 4–12 weeks of daily use.
With foodThe trials do not set a rule; follow the product label.
FormsCapsule. Longvida is a trademarked ingredient from Verdure Sciences; labels may state mg of Longvida or mg of curcumin (400mg Longvida is about 80mg curcumin). Other curcumin products (Theracurmin, BCM-95, Meriva and plain curcumin) are different formulations with their own evidence.

よくある質問

Is Longvida the same as turmeric or plain curcumin?

No. Longvida is a specific solid lipid curcumin formulation; 400mg of it provides about 80mg of curcumin. Trials of other curcumin products are not evidence for Longvida, and the Longvida trials are not evidence for them.

What dose was tested?

400mg of Longvida a day (about 80mg curcumin) in the two positive cognition trials. Two trials at 2000mg a day found no cognitive benefit, so a higher dose has not been shown to work better.

Who funded the research?

Verdure Sciences, which makes Longvida, funded the 2020 positive trial. The two trials that found no benefit were funded by the US National Institutes of Health, with capsules supplied by Verdure Sciences. Both positive trials come from one research group and have not been repeated independently.

Is it safe?

The trials reported no serious adverse event attributed to curcumin. One trial found slightly higher fasting blood glucose after 12 weeks, so people with diabetes should ask a doctor first. Turmeric supplements have been linked to rare liver injury, and curcumin may interact with warfarin.
